The Pencils
What a Battle Pencil actually is — the character, the battle symbol, the three numbers and how they are balanced.
Every Battle Pencil carries four things on its barrel, and between them they hold the entire game. There is no board, no card and no rulebook — the pencil is the component.

A pencil's symbol is not what it does. It is what your opponent has to answer.
Every pencil carries exactly one, and it never changes. This is the part everyone gets wrong first: your opponent's symbol selects which of your three numbers counts in that exchange. A pencil is therefore never strong on its own — it is strong against particular things.

The numbers
Three values are printed around the barrel, one beside each symbol. They can fall anywhere between 1 and 99.

What matters is not the individual figures but their shape.
The average, the spread between highest and lowest, and where the gaps sit. Two pencils can carry identical totals and feel nothing alike in play.

No character is stronger than another. Only differently spent.
Every pencil is balanced to the same overall power, and the design work goes into how that power is distributed rather than how much of it there is.
That is a deliberate constraint. A new pencil can never be an upgrade, only a different set of answers — so collecting adds range rather than advantage.

The exception that proves the rule
Some pencils bend a rule instead of raising a number. Optimistic Prime only ever rolls primes, which is a constraint rather than a bonus.
Primes thin out as numbers grow, so its ceiling is capped in exchange for a distinctive pattern.
The object itself
What it is made of
Cedar matters because a sharpener cuts in a spiral, so the wood has to shave cleanly across the grain as well as along it. Composite barrels tear instead, which is the usual reason a novelty pencil will not hold a point.

Why hexagonal
Two reasons, both practical. A six-sided barrel does not roll off a sloping desk, and hexagons tessellate, so more pencils are cut from a slat with less waste.
There is a third reason here: flat faces are what make a pencil rollable as a game piece with a readable result. A round barrel gives no stable face to land on.

That is what your opponent must answer, and it never changes.
Those are the matchups it wants to be drawn into.
Wide means volatile. Narrow means dependable.
The third question decides most games. Under the counter rule a pencil that wins must roll again, so being locked in with a volatile pencil is a genuine liability — the reasoning is worked through in the full rules and strategy guide.
