Questions
Which variance is used?
Population variance, dividing by the number of values. A pencil's faces are the complete set of possible outcomes rather than a sample drawn from something larger, so the population formula is the correct one here.
What is the difference between mean and median?
The mean adds every number and divides by how many there are. The median is the middle number when they are put in order. When one very high or very low number is present, the median often describes the pencil better.
What does standard deviation mean in a battle?
It measures how far results usually sit from the average. A low value means a pencil behaves predictably; a high value means it wins big and loses badly, which makes matches more of a gamble.
